| Our Interns in Action |
As planning on the Rapid Transit System for the Lowcountry
moves forward, issues are beginning to arise which people who want real rapid transit
need to work together to resolve.
Wednesday Summerville Outreach- We’ll be doing
outreach in downtown Summerville from 10 am to Noon on Wednesday, June 19
starting at the Stage on Hutchison Square to empower people to be effective advocates
at the upcoming meetings. If you would like to help us get the word out to help
be sure Summerville is connected to our planned Rapid Transit System, please join

Summerville, Lincolnville and Ladson shouldn’t be
left out of our rapid transit line. This route proposal map released by the
Council of Governments two weeks ago includes an option (marked here in blue)
to bypass those communities and run the transit line on I26 to the private
development at Nexton.
While we want Nexton to have transit services, this shouldn’t
be achieved that the expense of established communities like Ladson,
Lincolnville and Summerville. Planning needs to begin now for a circulator bus
route which will connect Nexton and areas around Summerville beyond walking
distance from the main line with the rapid transit stations in Summerville and
on Highway 78 at Royle Road in Lincolnville. A major park and ride facility
should be planned as well. We know opposition to the transit project exists in
the area, but we’re confident if the thousands of people speak out who want
transit restored (A train ran several times a day until 1963) between Summerville
and Charleston that progress will be possible.

Downtown Charleston- This same map also still
includes the unworkable proposal to attempt to run this system from Mt.
Pleasant Street to Line Street in the congested Traffic of Meeting street in
Downtown Charleston instead of on the available railroad line under I26. Read

our transit line should run on the old railroad line.

Transit Line. These are drop in meetings so you can come any time you like as
stay for as brief or as long a time as you want.

Progress is being made. We thank you for your support. As the
HDR Engineering firm works forward on it’s 4.7 million dollar design contract
for the system will continue to work to make sure you have the opportunity to
be heard.
